I 3D Printed a Shower Shelf That Lasted 7 Years

In this article, I show you my path towards a 3D printed shower organization solution.



I've bought more shower organizers than I care to admit.

Eventually I found myself doing what many people do: storing bottles on the shower floor. It technically works, but in the same way your kitchen floor technically works as a pantry. I figured there had to be a better solution.


The Goal: No Drilling into Tile

I knew one thing from the beginning: I didn't want to drill holes into the shower wall. Instead, I looked at something that was already securely attached to the shower: the grab handle. If I could design a shelf that mounted to the existing grab handle, I'd have a sturdy installation without risking cracked tile or water damage.

Starting With Cardboard

Before opening any CAD software, I grabbed some cardboard. It's one of the fastest ways to test an idea.

I cut out a simple shelf and mocked up a pair of brackets to see if the concept would actually work. The basic idea looked promising.

Designing the Shelf

Once the size was right, I moved into CAD and started adding features:

  • Lip to prevent bottles from sliding off the shelf

  • Drainage holes throughout the shelf (Large enough to flip soap bottles upside down so I can squeeze every last drop out)

  • Razor storage slots

  • Washcloth hooks

  • Strong mounting brackets

Every feature came from actually using the shower every day.

Printing the Parts

For this project I printed the shelf using the BIQU CryoGrip Glacier build plate. BIQU and BigTreeTech sent it to me for evaluation, and it performed especially well on these large, flat parts by keeping the print securely attached throughout the job. Large prints like this can be challenging because even slight lifting can ruin an otherwise perfect print. Fortunately, everything stayed firmly attached until the print was complete. This shelf (and the original) was printed using PLA.

Assembly

One of my favorite finishing touches on functional prints is using brass heat-set inserts. They create a much stronger threaded connection than driving screws directly into plastic, and they make assembly and future maintenance much easier.

There's also something incredibly satisfying about combining metal hardware with a 3D printed part.

The Real Test: Seven Years

The shelf has now been in daily use for over seven years. That's thousands of showers. Four family members. Countless bottles of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and cleaning supplies. It has quietly done its job every single day. In fact, the only reason I'm redesigning it now is to make the drainage holes larger so shampoo bottles can drain more efficiently. Not because the original failed.

Why This Is One of My Favorite 3D Prints

People often think of 3D printing as a hobby for making toys, gadgets, or decorative objects. But projects like this remind me why I enjoy it so much. When you own a 3D printer, you don't have to settle for products that are close enough. You can build exactly what you need. This shelf isn't flashy. It doesn't have moving parts. It isn't a complicated engineering project. But it's one of the most successful things I've ever designed because it solved a real problem for my family and has continued doing so every day for years. To me, that's what functional 3D printing is all about.
